Cooking For Fido

November 1 2023

Today is Cook For Your Pets Day! It’s probably safe to say that Fido would be more than happy to sample some homemade recipes. There are definitely some benefits to cooking for your canine pal. However, there are also a few pitfalls to be aware of. A Denver CO vet discusses cooking for your dog in this article.

Benefits

One of the best things about cooking for Fido is the fact that can customize your pup’s meals to suit both his taste and his dietary needs. You can ensure that your dog is getting proper nutrition, and can monitor the quality of his foods. You also won’t have to worry about your pooch ingesting any toxins, chemicals, or harmful by-products.  For dogs that have allergies or specific dietary needs, this is also a great way to ensure that your canine pal is eating exactly what he should be.

Ingredients

Only include things that are safe for Fido. Most types of meat, fish, and poultry are fine, provided that you’ve removed the skin, bones, and fat. You do want to limit organ meat and processed meat, however. You can also add certain fruits and veggies, such as spinach, peas, carrots, squash, and sweet potato. Ask your vet for more information.

It’s also important to be aware of dangerous foods. That list includes garlic, onions, scallions, and chives; grapes, currants, and raisins; avocado; alcohol; any fruits with seeds or pips; chocolate; alcohol; nuts; mushrooms; and xylitol. Meat should only be offered de-boned.

Recipes

You’ll find plenty of recipes online. Don’t assume that any and all of them will be safe for your furry best friend. Dogs all have unique needs. Something that may be suitable for a Pomeranian puppy likely isn’t the best option for an arthritic Great Dane. Many of these recipes also haven’t really been vetted by someone with expertise on doggy nutrition. That can not only lead to nutritional imbalances, it can also be dangerous.

Supplements

We are big believers in holistic care, and advocate using natural treatments when appropriate. That includes things like supplements, medicinal mushrooms, and herbs. Ask your vet for specific advice. Nutrition is definitely not one-size-fits-all.

Tools

Do you enjoy getting kitchen gadgets? You can now get dog treat makers, which are basically waffle makers with bone-shaped slots. You can also get freezer molds and cookie cutters just for Fido.
