You Need to Start Preparing Your Dog For Fireworks Now

The 4th of July will be here soon and in many areas, people start shooting off fireworks weeks beforehand. The 5th of July is the busiest day in shelters across the country because of all the dogs and cats that escapewhen they are frightened by fireworks. Using these simple tips will help to keep your pet calm and safe.

Safe Place- set up a room that is quiet and comfortable. Make sure the doors and windows are fully closed. Your pet should have a comfortable bed (or kennel if your pet is accustomed to being kenneled). Play calmingmusic or white noise to help distract from the sound of fireworks.

Updated Identification- Make sure your pet has a collar and tag with your number and/or a microchip that is updated with your current contact information. This way, if your pet does get out they will have a better chance of being returned to you.

Natural Stress-relievers- For cats, use Feliway spray or plug-in. Feliway is a feline pheromone that has a calming effect on cats. Use Adaptil pheromone spray or collar for dogs. You can also diffuse essential oils such as lavender or chamomile in the room.

Prescription Antianxiety Medications-Severe anxiety in dogs and cats can lead to them harming themselves and your home. In these cases, a prescription antianxiety medication can be very helpful. A commonly used sedative, acepromazine, is not a good solution for dogs with noise phobias and can often make the fear worse. Better alternatives include alprazolam and trazodone. Consult your veterinarian about a sedative early on: you will need to test the dosage prior to the 4th or other stressful event.

By preparing early, you can help alleviate the stress on your pet and ensure that they stay safe in your home as the 4th of July approaches.
