Should You Be Giving Supplements To Your Dog?

This is a question we are asked all the time. Pet owners want to make sure they are providing their dogs with everything they need. While pretty much all commercial dog foods are nutritionally balanced, adding specific types of supplements can help prevent or manage many health issues. There are thousands of supplements out there and deciding which if any to use can be overwhelming. We broke down the most commonly used supplements, what to look for and when to use them.

Choose supplements that are non-GMO and organic when available and without fillers such as maltodextrin.

Joint supplements

What they do:

  • Maintain and rebuild cartilage and joint fluid
  • Slow progression of arthritis
  • Reduce joint inflammation and pain

Joint supplements can be given before signs of arthritis develop to help keep your dog’s joints healthy. Using a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement in dogs who are showing signs of stiffness can provide long term benefits. It may take 1-2 months before you notice improvement in mobility.

Glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin sulfate are the main ingredients in joint supplements. These are the building blocks for new cartilage in joints.

Green-lipped mussel is anti-inflammatory and contains cartilage building blocks.

Curcumin (turmeric) helps to decrease inflammation in the joints.
